The British Broadcasting Company has canceled All Together Now, the Saturday night UK singing competition with Geri ‘Ginger Spice’ Horner. The singing contest series, which was aired for only 2 seasons, was generating mixed reviews from critics. After completing its one year on air, All Together Now has been officially canceled.
All Together Now, hosted by stand-up comedian Rob Beckett, had a singing competition show format - involving a unique panel of 100 music experts that were handpicked throughout the UK. If a judge liked the singer’s performance, they would press a button that signaled a yellow light behind them, indicating a vote, then stood to support the singer by joining in the sing-along. One of the 100 in the panel was Geri Horner, also known as Ginger Spice of the pop group Spice Girls. The higher the number of judges who stand in support, the higher the singer’s final score. At the end of each series, the singer with the most points would win a £50,000 cash prize.
This week, the show was officially cut by BBC due to a rapid decline in viewers after the show’s return for season 2 - drawing in half a million fewer watchers than the previous year.
A BBC spokesperson told TellyMix: “We would like to thank Rob and Geri and all members of The 100…the production team for all their hard work in launching such a successful format.”
Throughout the two seasons it was on the air, All Together Now received many mixed reviews - many of which praised the format in spite of other shortcomings. It turns out that, though the show was entertaining to some, it just didn’t draw in a consistent viewership that would inspire confidence in greenlighting season 3.
Whether or not the cancellation of All Together Now is merely a speedbump in Beckett and Horner’s respective careers, many fans are hoping the pair get picked up for a different BBC series. Horner, better known as Ginger Spice is currently touring the UK and Ireland with the other Spice Girls as part of the group’s reunion tour for the next few weeks. The pop icons had previously been rumored to star in an animated Spice Girls movie - which appears to be on-track (with much a better prospect of reaching audiences than All Together Now season 3). Meanwhile, Beckett is preparing to take his comedy act on the road - with a tour starting this October.
Wherever the hosts end up, now that there is an open primetime spot available, the BBC might as well be on the hunt for a new singing competition series.
