Fans of the David Hasselhoff’s hit TV series Baywatch are going to find the upcoming movie version is “far dirtier,” says star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Starring Hasselhoff and introducing the likes of Pamela Anderson from 1989 to 2001, Baywatch was a guilty pleasure for TV fans as beach guards who happened to be extremely attractive protected swimmers on exotic coastlines.

The show gave Hasselhoff the opportunity to show off how buff he was to fans across the globe (leading to his side career as a rock star in Germany), and featured such actresses as Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Alexandra Paul, Nicole Eggert and Gena Lee Nolin in sexy one-piece swimsuits. With the R-rated movie version of the show set for release next month, Johnson is starting to spill more details.

In an interview with The Sun in the U.K., The Rock said movie fans will get far more raunch than they got with the internationally syndicated TV hit:

Making Baywatch a bawdy, R-rated comedy was no doubt the best move director Seth Gordon, Johnson and company could have made. After all, they’re working in film, where the sky’s the limit, and when you have as much international appeal as Johnson has, he needs to strike while the iron is sizzling hot. Anything less than an R would honestly come off as bland, and worst-case scenario would come off as just an updated episode of the TV show. An R-rating, on the other hand, affords the movie the separation from the show that it desperately needs.

“We are far dirtier than the show ever was – obviously the show was a family show on at family time of day – but in the movie we could have been dirtier. I think people are going to be shocked that Baywatch has got dirty – but there are a lot of laughs … We worked hard to make sure the flesh quota was high, there’s more gratuitous boobs, bums, abs, whatever per minute than you can imagine. Plot was important, don’t get me wrong, but so was sorting out our slow motion runs.”

Taking over the role of Mitch Buchanan from Hasselhoff, Johnson’s not the only person who will get to show off his rock-hard body in Baywatch. All dressed in much skimpier swim attire, other Baywatch personnel includes Zac Efron (as Matt Brody, played by David Charvet in the TV series) and Alexandra Daddario (as Summer Quinn, previously played by Eggert). And while Kelly Rohrbach is set to play C.J. Parker, Anderson – who made the character a pop culture icon – is set to appear in a cameo in the film along with The Hoff.

Ultimately the moviegoers will get decide whether the move makes a difference come May 25 when Baywatch is released, a day earlier than originally planned to get a jump on the crowded Memorial Day weekend movie slate.
