In addition to the acting stylings of David Hasselhoff and an ever-changing cast of beautiful actresses that included Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, and Nicole Eggert, the original 1990s syndicated TV version of Baywatch was known for something else: Long lingering shots of the cast members running on the beach.
The Baywatch movie adaptation is currently in production with a planned release in May of 2017. The film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the Hasselhoff role, and all indications are that it’s a silly, R-rated, self-referential action-comedy in the tradition of the 21 Jump Street movies, while also paying a great deal of tribute to the key touchstones of the source material. And now thanks to one of its stars penchant for keeping fans updated through his social media accounts, those interested in the film can rest easy knowing there will be plenty of beach-running in the upcoming feature film.
In fact, Johnson shared a photo on his Facebook account, featuring himself and other cast members in that familiar pose:
“We are the reason you feel safe in the water,” Johnson writes in the post. “We are the reason you feel safe on the sand. We are also literally running iconically in slo-motion because apparently that makes everyone’s kibbles and bits look sexy.”
The photo includes co-stars Kelly Rohrbach, Ilfenesh Hadera, and Alexandra Daddario, along with Johnson himself, Zac Efron and Jon Bass (he’s the one with the shirt). Earlier in the week, Johnson posted a couple of other photos from the set, while also confirming that original series star Pamela Anderson will be making an appearance.
The photos make it appear that the Baywatch movie is going to appeal to audiences on several fronts: By cultivating nostalgia for the original series, by featuring the movie’s popular stars, and by emphasizing the satirical, comedic tone that led to big box-office success for the Jump Street movies. After all, Johnson’s charisma has proven to be a hit with audiences in both comedic and dramatic (well, action) roles, while the premise of beautiful people hanging out on the beach performing daring rescues isn’t exactly something that’s become dated since the ’90s.
The question is, will Baywatch be able to come up with anything as clever for Anderson and Hasselhoff as the Johnny Depp cameo in the first 21 Jump Street movie? It’ll be up to the film’s director (Seth Gordon) and four credited screenwriters to find a way.
Baywatch will be released May 19, 2017.
