Battlefield 5 is arriving this year, and fans of the franchise are patiently awaiting what DICE has in store to help set the game apart from the crowd. However, there’s one game mode that could work incredibly well in the first-person shooter, and one that has become a major sensation in gaming over the last year or so. In short, Battlefield 5 should have a Battle Royale mode.

Of course, the most popular Battle Royale games on the market have already cemented their places in online gaming. Fortnite has become such a major sensation that it has seeped well and truly into overall pop culture, while PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds went from an early access sensation to one of the top ten best selling games of all time in a blink of an eye.

However, Battlefield 5 could offer something different to both, and its pedigree could truly make a Battle Royale mode to be reckoned with. The Battlefield franchise as a whole built its name on the level of scope it was able to provide in comparison to its competitors, and it’s no surprise that there are even suggestions that a Battle Royale prototype is in the works for Battlefield 5, albeit as a post-release update. After all, the inclusion of a 100-person deathmatch mode wouldn’t be that much more of a strain that the current 64 player servers.

What’s more, Battlefield has continually made a name for itself by mixing up its multiplayer modes from release to release. The Levolution events of Battlefield 4 brought a level of malleability to the game that competitors were sorely lacking, while the Battlefield 1 Behemoths seriously changed the dynamic of games, as well as making their mark on the maps themselves when done.

A Battle Royale mode for Battlefield 5 would work in a similar way to these previous incremental changes. It would be something new - albeit familiar to those that had played the likes of Fortnite or PUBG - and be a refreshing change of pace for those wanting to step back from the core gameplay modes such as Conquest. Nothing says taking a break from large-scale team combat like moving onto something a little more single-minded.

Of course, a drag-and-drop Battle Royale mode might not be the most exciting prospect for the title, particularly given that it’s already a tried-and-tested formula from other games. However, DICE would likely put a nice original spin on the game mode, in keeping with its other nuanced changes seen over time. If the reports of a return to WWII are correct, that could also give the studio some interesting space to work with.

On top of that, it would also allow Battlefield to keep up with the expectations set by some of its closest competitors. It’s looking likely that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will have a Battle Royale mode, and that the new game mode will in fact be a replacement for a removed single player campaign. Above that, The Division developer Massive Entertainment is also said to be making a Battle Royale game, so between these two moves DICE may want to give their own spin on the mode, and prove its place as the best multiplayer experience around.

It remains to be seen whether Battlefield 5 will include a Battle Royale game mode, although the suggestions that a prototype is in the works certainly suggests that DICE and EA are giving it their best shot. However, the developer is undoubtedly one of the best fits to make an interesting Battle Royale game mode, and it would certainly be an interesting step to take. With Battlefield seemingly a perfect fit for the mode, fans of Battle Royale games in general could have something special on the way.
