The next installment in DICE’s long-running Battlefield franchise is rumored to be Bad Company 3. In 2002, DICE launched their brand-new first-person-shooter, Battlefield 1942, which put them on the map and made their all-out war focus a force to be reckoned with. The Swedish video game developer, which now operates under Electronic Arts (EA) as EA DICE, has been making Battlefield games ever since, while occasionally taking time to develop other games as well, such as Mirror’s Edge and Star Wars Battlefront.

While most Battlefield installments over the years have been part of the core, numbered series, DICE experimented with the franchise in 2008 with the release of Battlefield: Bad Company. Whereas most Battlefield games are developed for PC and later ported to console, the Bad Company series was developed specifically for console play - and it was heralded by gamers around the world. A sequel, Bad Company 2, released in 2010 and some still considered it to be the best chapter of the entire franchise, especially since the game introduced several new elements into the series that continue to be used to this day. In 2011, however, DICE revived the mainline Battlefield series (that had been dormant since 2006) with the release of Battlefield 3 and set aside plans for Bad Company 3… until now.

YouTuber user AlmightyDaq is reporting that DICE’s 2018 Battlefield installment is actually Bad Company 3. The long-awaited sequel is rumored to be set in mid-to-post-Vietnam War, with some Cold War settings as well, though those connections may not be historically accurate. Conquest, Rush, Operations, Domination, and Team Deathmatch all will return for Bad Company 3. A 5v5-centric mode similar to Squad Obliteration will also be present in the game.

AlmightyDaq also says Bad Company 3 will move away from Battlefield’s standard all-out warfare style to focus on maps that will promote “tighter gameplay,” similar to maps from Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3. Everything else in the game - from customization to weapon and vehicle selection - will resemble Battlefield 4 more than Battlefield 1, though each item will be from the Cold War era. What’s more, Bad Company 3 will not have microtransactions (and may not have battlepacks at all) due to the controversy surrounding Star Wars: Battlefront II.

While many people may be skeptical about this rumor, especially since Battlefield fans have been waiting years for Bad Company 3 to enter development, the fact that it comes from AlmightyDaq should ease fans’ minds. AlmightyDaq has leaked Battlefield 1 information in the past and those have turned out to be spot on. So, while this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt (as should all rumors), there’s certainly a possibility that it may be true. Should it come to fruition, franchise fans should expect an official announcement at either the Game Developers Conference in March 2018 or shortly before E3 in June 2017 (perhaps in early May 2018, seeing as Battlefield 1 was officially unveiled in May 2016, right before E3).
