2016 is finally here, and for fans of DC Comics that means exactly one thing - Batman and Superman are finally going to share the silver screen. Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice promises not only to unite the biggest characters in the DC Universe, but to serve as a springboard for launching a new cinematic universe. With the Marvel Cinematic Universe entering its eighth year in 2016, it feels like this film has been a long time coming.

While Batman V Superman is a highly anticipated film, there hasn’t been an outpouring of love in the months leading up to release. The film is a followup to the divisive Man of Steel, meaning for some fans the film is already starting at a disadvantage. The second trailer was criticized for revealing too much of the film’s plot, and fans still aren’t sold by Jesse Eisenberg’s take on Lex Luthor. Early rumors indicate positive reviews, but there may have also been a number of spoilers revealed.

Speaking with MTV, director Zack Snyder shared his feelings about potential spoilers and their effect on the film.

It’s important to note that the spoilers that were recently revealed are currently still rumored and that the director called the spoiler-heavy review “hilarious.” He went on to say that searching for spoilers is an “individual taste,” but encouraged viewers to go into the movie without knowing too much.

“Of course I hate it when any spoilers come out! You design the movie as a story that evolves as you watch it, so moment-to-moment [you’re thinking], ‘Oh my god, what’s going to happen next? Are they gonna live? Are they gonna die?’ So you want that experience for the audience, as much as you can.”

Snyder also took the opportunity to address a few of the criticisms surrounding the film’s advertisements. As far at the notion that the trailer reveals too much, he’s confident there’s still plenty of mystery to the film.

Jesse Eisenberg’s take on Lex Luthor has been contentious so far, with some fans feeling that he’s just too manic in the trailers. Eisenberg himself has indicated that his take on Luthor is deeper than what’s been seen so far, and Snyder agrees that the trailer doesn’t show everything.

“I have the benefit of seeing the movie. It’s cool that they think it’s too much and I appreciate people not wanting to know, but there’s plenty that they don’t know. There’s a lot of movie that’s not in the trailer.”

“In the trailer, of course he comes across in a very specific way. In the movie, he’s like a million times more sophisticated than what you get in 30 seconds. But that’s also the fun of it. That’s why you go to the movies, so you can actually see the context and understand the depth.”

Finally, Snyder spoke a bit about Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, a character that’s long deserved a place on the big screen. There’s excitement building around her, and the director indicated that the excitement is completely warranted.

As the final months stretch on before the film’s release, rumors and speculation are only expected to increase in quantity and peculiarity. For those not yet sold on the film, the director’s words aren’t likely to put minds at ease. Still, they’re a good reminder that until fans have seen the movie for themselves, it might be best to withhold judgement. There’s every chance that Lex Luthor will surprise audiences and resonate most with the viewers.

“We kind of tried to just listen to Wonder Woman… to preserve her mystery but understand her as much as we can, in the way that we see her in the movie… I think that [Gadot] is amazing, an amazing Wonder Woman and really - I feel like there’s an atmosphere out in the world where this giant iconographic strong female superhero, it’s time. It’s long overdue.”
