The first big blockbuster on 2016’s lineup is Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, which arrives in March. Marketing for the film is starting to push into high gear, and it seems like there is something new to talk about every day. Actors are starting to make the rounds, talking about their characters, like Amy Adams who recently commented on her relationship with Superman and her “big moment” with Batman. We’ve also heard new information about Wonder Woman and Doomsday.

Batman V Superman will finally feature the first fight between the two most iconic superheroes (arguably) of all time. The film will also introduce Wonder Woman and several other members of the Justice League. While much of the film will focus on the conflict between Batman and Superman, it will also lead into the upcoming Justice League, Part 1, due out next year. Director Zack Snyder even referred to Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice as the start of a trilogy that will continue with the two Justice League films.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Superman actor Henry Cavill had some additional words about where we find Clark Kent/Superman in in the film, and why he chooses to fight against Batman. First of all, he mentions that Superman is far more experienced than when we last saw him in Man of Steel:

“He’s more used to this gig, doing his best to save as many lives as he can. He is no longer frantic. He’s no longer a wet behind the ears kind of superhero.”

But in addition to his added experience, Superman’s approach differs dramatically from Batman’s, and Cavill had a few more words about how the two superheroes butt heads on their methods. Cavill said:

Lastly, Cavill commented on the differences between Clark Kent and Superman, and how his performance differed from that of famed Superman actor Christopher Reeve.

“He doesn’t agree with [Batman’s] form of justice. For this farm boy, who tries to do things the right way, justice at any cost is not something he can come to terms with. It’s not about one on one. Of course Superman is going to win. But it’s deeper than that. It’s more that these two great powers exist and are actually trying to achieve the same thing, but in such different way…”

“He is the human side of the character, but there is often this idea that Clark and Superman must be so different. He can only get away with wearing the glasses so much. If he’s drawing attention to himself by being clumsy, that’s not going to work.”

So it sounds like Clark Kent won’t be the bashful, awkward sort seen in the original Superman films. From Cavill’s comments, he will try to blend in and avoid unnecessary attention. Fans generally loved Christopher Reeve’s performance as Clark Kent, but Cavill’s comments do make a lot of sense. In the end, they will be two different performances those watching will be left to decide which they prefer.

Picking a side seems to be a key part of the film’s marketing just ahead of its theatrical release. Both the director and a new poster (along with several hashtags) have asked audiences to pick which hero they think will emerge victorious with the #WhoWillWin campaign. While fans will have to wait just a little longer to find out exactly how this brouhaha ends, a “philosophically satisfying” conclusion to the titular struggle has been promised. Although that may be a little vague, it could be the opening the film needs in order to introduce the rest of the Justice League, who, it has been said, will be “standing together” by the time the credits role.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters on March 25th, 2016; Suicide Squad on August 5th, 2016; Wonder Woman – June 23rd, 2017; Justice League – November 17th, 2017; The Flash – March 23rd, 2018; Aquaman – July 27th, 2018; Shazam – April 5th, 2019; Justice League 2 – June 14th, 2019; Cyborg – April 3rd, 2020; Green Lantern – June 19th, 2020.
