For quite some time now, the impending arrival of Zack Snyder’s gargantuan superhero face-off, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, has been met with a seemingly endless amount of scrutiny and speculation. Analysts, critics and fans alike all made prediction after prediction as to exactly what was going to happen when the movie finally landed in theatres on March 25th.
In terms of overall quality, Batman v Superman has been thoroughly polarizing: pleasing some and disappointing others. There’s been no small amount of controversy over the movie’s release, as well as the subsequent pummelling it’s been dealt online by some reviewers, but from a commercial perspective it appears that it’s very much Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice that’s doing the pummelling.
The movie’s opening day take has now been posted online courtesy of Box Office Mojo and what it reveals is that Batman v Superman’s first 24 hours in the theatres has brought in an impressive $82,010,000. That total is easily enough to beat out all other competition for the day (by a long shot), but it also puts Batman v Superman at number four in terms of top single day grosses of all time.
Given this new state of affairs, the current top single day grosses of all time list is as follows: Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens unsurprisingly sits quite comfortably in the number one spot with $119,119,282, followed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($91,071,119), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($84,424,532), Batman v Superman ($82,010,000) and Jurassic World ($81,953,950). It’s also worth noting that in terms of the number of theaters screening these films, Jurassic World (4,274), Avengers: Age of Ultron (4,276), and Deathly Hallows Part 2 (4,375) all opened on more screens than Batman v Superman (4,242) did, making Dawn of Justice’s box-office tally that much more impressive. Only the The Force Awakens opened in fewer theatres than any of the other films in the top five.
Despite the huge opening day haul, it’s wise to remember that given Batman v Superman’s massive budget being in excess of $250 million, it will need to make upwards of half a billion dollars worldwide to break even - and some analysts have said it will need to hit $800 million. The $82 million made in a single day could be taken as evidence that this won’t be a problem, but the fact that the movie’s reviews haven’t been stellar needs to be considered. Hardcore fans flock to theatres in the initial days of a release such as this – however, bad reviews can keep the much-needed average filmgoers away.
Whatever Batman v Superman’s final box-office tallies do end up being, everything about this movie has been an event thus far. There’s no doubt that it’s arrived with a bang and how exactly this tremendous giant will now conduct itself should be yet another large-scale spectacle to watch unfold.
