Besides being a likely blockbuster in the making, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice represents multiple firsts for the film branch of DC Comics. Most obviously, the film will officially mark the transition into a larger, intertwined DC movie universe, along with playing host to the first meeting between Batman and Superman in the history of live-action cinema. The characters of Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg will be making their film debuts as well. Still, perhaps the most buzzed-about aspect of Batman V Superman is the addition of Wonder Woman, played by Israeli model-turned-actress Gal Gadot.
That statement is sure to delight any Wonder Woman fans with latent fears that Diana Prince and her heroic alter ago were included in Zack Snyder’s upcoming film simply to create some sort of super love triangle, or cause tension between the two alpha males. This fear would not be entirely unfounded for longtime fans, as Wonder Woman has served as either a love or lust interest for both Batman and Superman in both DC’s comic books and some of their animated adaptations. In fact, when Batman first ran into Wonder Woman in the Trinity series, he was so overcome with desire that he planted a kiss on her, only to get a punch to the jaw for his troubles.
“For BvS it was important for me that we show how independent she is. She is not relying on a man, and she’s not there because of a love story. She’s not there to serve someone else. She has so many strengths and powers, but at the end of the day she’s a woman with a lot of emotional intelligence. She’s loving.”
Snyder could have easily gone the route of inserting a romantic storyline for Wonder Woman into BVS, and it’ll be refreshing to many fans of the character that she’s set to retain the fierce independence that has often defined her. That said, it’ll be interesting to see how this independence is greeted in the macho World War I-era America that serves as the setting for Wonder Woman’s 2017 solo film. Of course, if she receives resistance from those involved, she could always employ the same method she used on Batman above.
