[This post contains POTENTIAL SPOILERS for Batman V Superman.]

-

With about a month-and-a-half until the release of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in theaters this March and interest in everything surrounding the new superhero movie is at an all-time high. Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment is banking on the surefire success of Batman V Superman to, not only be one of the most profitable and exciting movies of 2016, but also kick off a new era of superhero movies with the DC Extended Universe.

Following the release of the final trailer for Batman V Superman, we’re seeing all sorts of new and interesting developments with the comic book movie’s story and characters. It’s no secret that Dawn of Justice will introduce superheroes like Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and, it seems, Aquaman (Jason Momoa) to the big screen, but it will also bring new life to old favorites, like Alfred Pennyworth (Jeremy Irons) and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg). However, it now seems all the more likely that even more established members of the DC Comics universe will get an update in the new superhero movie.

As picked up by CBM, a photo of a French magazine that features character profiles from Batman V Superman has surfaced online. It shows off actors we already know are in the movie, such as Michael Shannon as (dead?) General Zod and Jefferey Dean Morgan as Thomas Wayne, but also features Jena Malone - claiming that she is playing Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Of course, Batgirl previously made her live-action big screen debut in the infamous Batman & Robin in 1997, where “The Dark Knight Damsel” was played by Alicia Silverstone.

There’ve been rumors that Malone is playing Carrie Kelly (aka. ‘Female Robin’) in Batman V Superman inspired in part by the film’s ties to Frank Miller’s graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns, where an aged Batman comes out of retirement to save Gotham City, while President Reagan calls upon Superman to put an end to the Cape Crusader. Carrie Kelly is a young girl who is obsessed being the new Robin, while Batman reluctantly takes her under his wing. Malone was also spotted during the film’s production with red hair, which points to her playing either Carrie Kelly or Barbara Gordon - and the latter may yet prove to be true. The character profile also says that Scoot McNairy will play Jimmy Olsen, but there are other rumors that say quite the contrary, so best to take this with a grain of salt for that reason.

It would make sense for Malone to play Barbara Gordon in Batman V Superman, if only because there aren’t many other key characters in the DC Comics Universe that immediately fit Malone’s look and demeanor. Again, though, this character profile isn’t officially from Warner Bros. or any of the filmmakers associated with the movie, so best to not take it as fact (… yet). Also, there’s no mention of the name of the French magazine, so it’s information that’s not easily confirmed. But if it turns out that Malone is playing Batgirl, then it’ll only further fuel those rumors that WB has a Birds of Prey movie in the pipeline, too.

Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice opens on March 25, 2016, which is followed by Suicide Squad on August 5, 2016; Wonder Woman on June 23, 2017; Justice League Part One on November 17, 2017; The Flash on March 23, 2018; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League Part Two on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and then Green Lantern Corps. on June 19, 2020.
