Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice cinematographer Larry Fong reveals that they indeed shot a sequence featuring Superman looking for Martha around Metropolis after learning that Lex Luthor kidnapped his mom. A frequent collaborator of Zack Snyder, Fong was the man behind the stunning shots of both Man of Steel and BvS, so this new bit of information from him has fans talking.

Saying that the 2016 first team-up movie from Warner Bros. and DC Films was divisive would be an understatement. While some fans praise Snyder’s unique take on two of the most popular superheroes ever, others weren’t exactly thrilled with several of his creative choices. Most of these liberties were regarding Superman - who was unusually pessimistic and brooding in the movie. But as it turns out, there was a deleted scene that could’ve made Clark more compelling: him hopelessly scouring through the streets of Metropolis to search for his mom Martha, who was kidnapped by Lex Luthor.

Interacting with some fans on Twitter, Fong was asked about the specific aforementioned scene, which Snyder previously talked about. While Fong wasn’t entirely sure if they were able to film the whole intended sequence, he does remember filming parts of it. Regardless if it was fully shot or not, the important thing is that it was originally intended to be in the movie until it was ultimately cut, mainly because " it sort of represented this dark side," as Snyder explained in 2016. Upon Fong’s confirmation, fans were generally in unison about wanting to see the scene - even if the visual effects weren’t finished (or maybe not even done at all). Check out Fong’s tweet below:

In hindsight, Snyder’s initial explanation on why the sequence was ultimately axed didn’t really make sense. The film could’ve been done without getting darker than the established tone of the film. If anything, perhaps the real reason why the sequence was removed was due to the movie’s running time getting extremely long. The theatrical cut of BVS was already two and a half hours long. The “Extended Version” Blu-Ray clocked in at three hours - and that’s still not including the scene currently in discussion.

That said, showing Clark actively using his powers to search for his kidnapped mom could’ve made Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’s story better and more dramatically fulfilling. The fact that this alien superhuman who’s basically immortal was so easily and quickly manipulated by a psychopathic Lex Luthor was one of the more notable narrative problems of the movie. This scene would’ve at least further established how desperate Superman was to save his mother, resulting in him begrudgingly fighting Batman, but without disregarding the fact that he’s the most powerful being on the planet.
