Though the film got off to a good start at the box office, the critical slamming and mixed word-of-mouth spelled a rough second weekend for Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. A Friday-to-Friday comparison showed a drop of over 80 percent in the box office, and it looks like the final figures for the full weekend will see a somewhat similar drop.

While the DCEU’s sophomore effort may not have been what everyone wanted, it did have some striking visuals. Some art from the film has already been revealed, and now concept artist Vance Kovacs has taken to Facebook to show off the work that he did on the film.

Kovacs posted some of the work that he did on Batman V Superman, especially in regard to the battle between the titular heroes. Across a few images, he managed to capture a lot of the action between the two heroes as they come to blows. You can see some of his pieces below:

Of note in Kovac’s gallery are images that depict a few different takes on Doomsday. In addition are images of Doomsday in various states of decay, there is also a “lean and spacey” take on the character who has a very alien look to him. It’s a much cleaner look to the creature, so it’s unclear whether this version would have still come from the corpse of General Zod or if he would have had a slightly different origin.

You can see the rest of Kovac’s concept pieces in his Facebook gallery here.

It’s always interesting to see concept art like this, where slightly different takes on the same character are shown off so we can see how the final design evolved. Seeing the concept work for the battle between Batman and Superman is also fun, because it shows how well art like this can capture action sequences. Not to mention the fact that it’s always fun to see heroes like Batman and Superman hard at work beating the snot out of each other.

Batman V Superman has certainly been a divisive film, and the release of concept art certainly isn’t going to change that. Those who enjoyed the film will likely appreciate seeing where some of its visuals came from, though, and even those who didn’t like it may like seeing how the design of Doomsday evolved.
