It is no secret that Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice needs to have some pretty stellar ticket sales to be considered a success. According to one report, it would need to gross $800 million globally just to turn a profit. Luckily for all involved, early indications are that the movie is going to be a box-office success. Some estimates have put the movie’s opening weekend numbers at $350 million globally, with $150 million of that coming from domestic ticket sales. Beyond estimates of the tickets that Batman V Superman will sell, though, are the concrete numbers of how many tickets it has already sold.
It was recently reported that Batman V Superman has rocketed to the top of Fandango’s list of top pre-selling superhero movies, beating previous contenders The Dark Knight Rises and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film also made up over 90 percent of Fandango’s total ticket sales last weekend. Those are significant milestones for the movie, and a good sign that early buzz is leading to a high amount of anticipation among fans.
The impressive ticket sales (as reported by The Wrap) can no doubt be attributed to the heavy marketing push from Warner Bros., which has included a number of featurettes to whet fans’ appetites. The featurette below, which comes by way of EW (via CBM) is the newest addition, and has director Zack Snyder discussing how and why some of the film’s scenes were shot in IMAX. The movie will be released not just in standard format and IMAX, but the sensory-overloading 4DX format as well.
There has been a wealth of record-breaking movies in the last few months, from Star Wars: The Force Awakens joining the $2 billion club to Deadpool becoming the highest grossing R-rated comic book movie of all time. The stakes for blockbuster movies keep getting higher and higher, with bigger budgets (except in Deadpool’s case) and bigger expectations. In many ways, the entire future of the DC Extended Universe rests on the shoulders of Batman V Superman, so a lot of future paychecks will depend on it doing well.
Time will tell whether or not Batman V Superman continues to break records once it its theaters in just a few days. After all, it does have its fair share of skeptics among those who felt that Snyder dropped the ball with Man of Steel and fear that history will repeat itself. Based on early indications, though, it appears Snyder will not be out of a job anytime soon.
