Peter Sarsgaard is the newest cast member of Matt Reeves’ The Batman movie. Warner Bros. and DC Films are finally nearing the start of a new solo Batman film. After originally being set to have Ben Affleck direct, produce, write, and star, Reeves was brought on board The Batman two years ago. Since then, his intention to use the film as a reboot of the Dark Knight has become evident with Robert Pattinson now set to play Bruce Wayne in the early years of him being a hero.

With this approach, details for The Batman have shown that Pattinson’s version of the caped crusader will be filled with some of Batman’s most recognizable foes from the comics. Zoë Kravitz has joined the project to play Selina Kyle aka Catwoman, while Colin Farrell will portray Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin. But, it will reportedly be Paul Dano as Edward Nashton aka Riddler who will be the main villain of the film. These are just a few of the roles that have been cast for The Batman though, and Reeves has now revealed the latest addition.

As revealed on his Twitter, Reeves confirmed that Sarsgaard has now joined the cast of The Batman. Unlike prior confirmations from the director, this tweet does not appear to reveal who he will play. There has been speculation that he could share his first name with his character, making him a possible fit for Deputy Commissioner Peter Grogan. Additionally, THR reports that he may play either a corrupt cop named Wasserman or a district attorney. Nothing is confirmed on those fronts though, leaving us with only Reeves’ tweet. This will not be Sarsgaard’s first role in a DC movie though. He previously played Hector Hammond in 2011’s Green Lantern.

With Sarsgaard’s role unconfirmed, the speculation over who he will play will be varied. If Wasserman is the role that he plays, then Sarsgaard would appear to be getting an original character for the film. There is a DC villain named Leah Wasserman aka Mindboggler, so it’s possible Reeves has an interest in utilizing the obscure comic book character. The more tantalizing possibility though is Sarsgaard playing a district attorney - specifically the one and only Harvey Dent aka Two-Face. Fans were quick to point out that Reeves’ gif choice has two faces in it, which could be a sly tease by the director or an example of fans reading too much into a post.

Sarsgaard’s role may currently be a secret, but we are likely to find out more in the coming months. Not only will Reeves be adding more names to the ensemble, but filming is scheduled to begin in early 2020. The start of production might bring some clarity to the plot and characters who are involved. In addition to Batman and the three villains mentioned before, it has been confirmed that Jeffrey Wright will play Commissioner Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis will play Alfred Pennyworth, and John Turturro will play Carmine Falcone. To this point, Reeves has assembled quite the collection of talent for The Batman, and the casting of Sarsgaard only adds to it.
