As fans, critics, and celebrities unite to share their favorite films of 2019, former president of the United States Barack Obama decided to share his thoughts, and he believes the Watchmen TV Show is as powerful as a film. The ninth and final episode of Watchmen season 1 aired earlier this month, and brought the series to an end, tying up a lot of the plot thread that the show introduced. The show has been applauded by critics for its powerful storytelling, delving into racial injustice in America with Sister Night (Regina King) being the central character of the show.

In addition to the critical acclaim, it has proven to be a ratings hit for HBO, and also an award-worthy show in the eyes of The American Film Institute, as the show will officially get an AFI Television Programs of the Year award on Jan. 3, 2020. Unlike the Watchmen film, which was directed by Zack Snyder, Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen is a continuation of the comics as opposed to an adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel. But despite the show’s successes, it has seemed to divide audiences as it currently has a 53 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, whereas Snyder’s film has a 71 percent score with audiences. However, former President Obama seems to be more in line with the critics when it comes to Watchmen, and perhaps finds Lindelof’s show more “powerful” than most.

On Twitter, Obama shared his list of favorite movies and TV shows of 2019. Among the list of films were Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, and American Factory, a film from his own production company. But above the list of TV shows, he writes “TV Shows That I Considered As Powerful As Movies,” and there he lists HBO’s Watchmen, as well as Fleabag: Season 2, and Unbelievable.

This isn’t the first time Obama has put out lists of his favorite films and songs. Last year, Obama listed Marvel’s Black Panther as one of his tops films of 2018. But unlike last year, this time the former president has decided to mention a select few TV shows that, in his words, are “as powerful as movies.” Whether fans will agree with Obama when it comes to his assessment of Watchmen is another question, but just like everybody else, he has the right to his opinion.

Considering the theme that is a part of Watchmen’s story, it’s easy to see how and why the show may have connected with Obama, and why he deems it to be a powerful series. Lindelof’s Watchmen is a unique superhero tale, and whether or not it returns for a season 2 remains to be seen. One idea that has been floating around for a potential Watchmen season 2 is if the show returns as an anthology. So Obama might get to see the return of one of his favorite series’ of 2019.
