Demi Burnett, who burst onto the Bachelor Nation scene this year with her sass and fearlessness, recently responded to rumors that she and Kristian Haggerty had broken up, saying, “It’s nobody’s business.” Even though the latest season of Bachelor in Paradise is in the rearview mirror, fans are still obsessed with how each relationship unfolds, especially the first same-sex relationship.

On season six of Paradise, Burnett started dating Derek Peth before realizing she still had feelings for Haggerty, who she had dated back home. Haggerty was flown out to Mexico, where the two instantly reconnected. Peth was left broken hearted, and he would find a brief romance with Tayshia Adams before John Paul Jones inserted himself into the picture. This led to Peth leaving on his own accord. Burnett and Haggerty, meanwhile, formed one of the most steady relationships on the show. When Haggerty had doubts about how serious Burnett was, Burnett assuaged her fears by saying she was 100 percent committed to Haggerty. When Burnett said she was uncomfortable showing affection in public, Haggerty told her she had nothing to be ashamed about. The two proposed to one another, Burnett on the beach and Haggerty at the reunion. By allowing Haggerty to stay on the show, the producers gave the audience a chance to see a different type of love. As Burnett is finding out, however, just because their love is different, it doesn’t mean she is immune to fans over-obsessing about the nature of their relationship now that the show is over.

In response to some fans questioning whether Burnett and Haggerty were still together because they don’t post photos together all the time, Burnett told Us Weekly “Every relationship is different and it’s like — I mean in the most respectful way — it’s nobody’s business how our relationship works." Burnett said the two haven’t begun wedding planning, as they are each traveling and not living together yet, taking baby steps as most do in relationships. Burnett said, “We’re not too far apart. I think it’s important to kind of have our space just so, you know, we can develop a normal, very solid, steady relationship."

Of course, since there was an engagement, the upcoming wedding will be a topic of discussion any time someone with a microphone is talking with Burnett. Those questions may last a while. Burnett told Us, “We’re definitely taking it slow and just enjoying our time together.”

Burnett’s statement that it’s none of other people’s business how their relationship works could be construed in a negative way. But she’s not saying that she doesn’t want fans to be invested in their love. She’s simply explaining that they shouldn’t offer judgment or fake inferences into how the relationship is progressing - or not - based on incomplete evidence. Couples who don’t post pictures with one another every chance they get could be going through a rough patch in their relationship, or they could just be enjoying lives that aren’t co-dependent upon one another. In the case of Burnett and Haggerty, it appears to be the latter.
