Scarlett Johansson and her fellow Marvel superheroes are taking action to help victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico with a special benefit. The hurricane devastated the island, which a month later is still largely without power or access to clean water, medical supplies, and food. The official number of people killed since the hurricane has been stated as anywhere from 50 to 450.

Many celebrities have come together to raise money for the victims of Maria. Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote “Almost Like Praying”, featuring a number of Latino and Latina artists singing the names of the cities in the small island nation. All proceeds from the purchase of the song are going to The Hispanic Federation’s Unidos Disaster Relief Fund. Rapper Pitbull and Real Housewives of New York City star Bethenny Frankel donated private planes to transport supplies. Nick Kroll and The Late Show host Stephen Colbert donated money for every celebrity who posted an embarrassing teenage picture of themselves using the hashtag #PuberMe.

According to Deadline, Johansson and fellow Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, and Mark Ruffalo are putting on a performance of the play Our Town written by Thornton Wilder. This one night only play will be directed by acclaimed theater director, Kenny Leon, who also directed Hairspray Live! The performance will take place on November 6 at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. The actors are currently in Atlanta filming Avengers 4.

Johansson spoke about the feeling “helpless” after hearing about the hurricane and wanting to find a way to do something:

Our Town tells the story of the small American town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire. The characters of the play interact with the audience, addressing them directly, answering questions, and even allowing some members to participate in the action on stage. Besides the cast members already mentioned, Johansson also promises other surprise guests and celebrity friends.

It is a great privilege to be able to participate in whatever way I can, to provide some relief to those that are struggling to access even the most basic of human needs in the aftermath of this disastrous event. Please help me and my co-stars in coming together for an extraordinary, one-time-only evening to raise lifesaving funds for a devastated island and to help celebrate the true meaning of community with this unique reading of a great American classic.

For those who can make it to Atlanta, the performance will be a memorable one. Having a play where the actors can interact with the audience is sure to cause some hijinks and fun, unexpected moments. It is great to see so many celebrities using their platforms to help those in need and stepping up during a crisis.

Tickets for the performance go on sale on October 23rd and can be purchased through FoxTheatre.org/OurTown.
