Chris Hemsworth has admitted that he was concerned that Avengers: Infinity War would undo Thor’s development, following his dramatic journey and character arc during Thor: Ragnarok.

Since he started playing Thor Odinson in 2011, Hemsworth’s God of Thunder has had one of the more dramatic character arcs out of any superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directors Kenneth Branagh, Alan Taylor, and Taika Waititi each brought their own version of the character to life in their respective Thor solo movies. However, it was Waititi’s Ragnarok that truly changed Thor into someone ready to do battle with the Mad Titan Thanos for the fate of the universe in Infinity War.

Speaking to News.com.au, Hemsworth confessed that he was worried that Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo would undo all of Waititi’s hard work and bring in another “new” version of Thor for their film:

Fortunately, the directing duo managed to calm Hemsworth’s fears and build from the version that Waititi had created, while also adding their own elements to his story:

“I came into this and called Joe and Anthony and said, ‘Look, don’t write me the old Thor, we’ve got a new Thor now. I was like ‘no, no, no’ and I was really protective of what I’d created with Taika.”

“They then said, ‘No this is a whole different thing; Thor’s never faced something like this, never been a part of this large and ensemble.’ I think for our characters it was difficult but for me a hugely exciting adventure.”

There is a reason that Ragnarok is largely thought of as Hemsworth’s best MCU performance to date. Balancing humor with hardship, a short-haired Odinson left the events of the movie with his homeworld destroyed but high hopes for the future. However, the Infinity War trailers tease there are more cataclysmic events to come for the God of Thunder and his people - culminating with Thor meeting up with the Guardians of the Galaxy somewhere in outer space.

Even with someone as present as Thor, it could be easy to lose a character in the massive ensemble of heroes that is Infinity War. With Ragnarok showcasing such a standout version of Odinson, it seems only right that the Russo Brothers are on the same page as Waititi when it comes to how Thor has been affected by his run-in with Hela and the destruction of Asgard - not to mention, an impending throwdown with Thanos. Given that the Russos are claiming that Thor has one of the more important roles in Infinity War, his journey of evolution as a character may be far from over, too.
