As Avengers: Infinity War continues its dominance of the box office, it’s set to pass The Dark Knight on the all-time domestic charts. Since opening in theaters about two weeks ago, Marvel’s latest has become a bona fide phenomenon, setting new U.S. and global opening weekend records en route to cracking $1 billion worldwide after just 11 days. The stage is set for Infinity War to have another fruitful frame at the marketplace, seeing that we’re still a week away from the premiere of Deadpool 2.

After just two weekends, Infinity War already placed fifteenth on the all-time charts, unseating The Dark Knight Rises from that position. By the time the numbers come in on Sunday, the epic crossover should have moved beyond another highly-successful Christopher Nolan Batman film: the seminal The Dark Knight.

Per Box Office Pro, Avengers 3 is projected to bring in roughly $58.5 million this weekend. That would raise its Stateside total to an impressive $544.1 million, which is $10 million more than The Dark Knight made in its run back in 2008. Of course, this doesn’t take into account ticket inflation or premium format prices (Dark Knight never played in 3D), but this is still a remarkable accomplishment and puts Infinity War on the cusp of working its way into the top five.

How further up Infinity War goes will depend on how well it holds against stiff competition. Deadpool 2 is estimated to earn $150 million in its first three days, while Solo: A Star Wars Story should break a Memorial Day record later this month. Despite both tentpoles taking away screens and business, nobody should expect Infinity War to drastically fall off any time soon. Thanks to positive word-of-mouth (particularly from fans), the film has had strong legs and that’ll likely continue. The original Avengers film went up against genre films like Men in Black 3 and Snow White and the Huntsman later in its run and ended up with $623.3 million in the States. Since Infinity War is well ahead of that pace, odds are it’ll eventually become the highest-grossing comic book film ever.

With everyone else still in the shadow of Marvel, a couple of well-timed counter-programming options are hoping to find some traction this Mothers Day weekend. Melissa McCarthy’s new comedy Life of the Party is expected to come in second with $21 million (on par with Tammy), while Gabrielle Union’s Breaking In should earn $15 million in its first three days. Both are playing to demographics outside of Infinity War’s typical audience, so they may be able to be somewhat successful.
