Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Avengers: Infinity War.

An important part of the Avengers: Infinity War trailer that was shown to attendees at San Diego Comic-Con in 2017 was actually taken from the movie’s climactic ending. The marketing campaign waged for Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers film was rather unprecedented for Marvel Studios. They went to great lengths to withhold spoilers for as long as possible while also giving fans a taste of what to expect. That made it difficult to cater to general audiences as well as MCU and comic book fans with each trailer.

However, long before the first Avengers: Infinity War trailer debuted last November, Marvel showed off the first footage at Comic-Con International last summer, giving Hall H attendees a special look at the culminating film. A lot of what was shown in that trailer wasn’t shown in all the other teasers, trailers, promos, and TV spots, which was actually the point. The filmmakers made that video specifically for the Comic-Con audience in mind. But, what’s interesting, is that the SDCC trailer actually included a scene from Infinity War’s ending.

Towards the end of the SDCC trailer (and the D23 trailer, for that matter), Peter Parker is seen in his Iron Spider suit, without his mask on, apologizing to Iron Man, saying, “I’m sorry.” At the time, it was believed by many fans that Peter was apologizing to a dying Tony, but the opposite turned out to be true. As fans now know, Thanos was successful in obtaining all six Infinity Stones and using the Infinity Gauntlet to wipe out half of all life in the universe. Unfortunately, Peter was one of the people who died as a result.

Although Peter was only seen saying, “I’m sorry,” in the trailer, the full quote from the movie is, “Mr. Stark? I don’t feel so good. I don’t - I don’t know what’s happening. … I don’t want to go. I don’t want to go, sir. Please. Please, I don’t want to go. I don’t want to go. I’m sorry.” That particular scene happens right after Thanos snaps his fingers, thus disintegrating Peter and several other superheroes. On Titan, that list includes Doctor Strange and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Tony and Nebula were the only ones left on Thanos’ home planet after the disintegration ended.

Tony Stark has had his fair share of traumatic moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far, but Peter Parker’s death will surely top all of that. It’s already seen affecting him in Avengers: Infinity War and that feeling will only be exacerbated in the forthcoming Avengers 4, which still doesn’t have a title. Of course, given that Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 (title to be determined) is already on the way, audiences shouldn’t expect Peter to stay dead forever. He’s an integral part of the MCU’s future, after all.
