Marvel Studios has moved Avengers: Infinity War up one week. Anticipation is running high for Marvel Studios’ nineteenth entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and understandably so. The studio has been building to Infinity War for 10 years now - and are releasing special merchandise to celebrate. Those special events are just tiding fans over at this point. So far, the movie’s marketing is still just in the early stages, with only one Infinity War theatrical trailer at this point. There was a TV spot at the 2018 Super Bowl too, but fans are dying for more.

The interest is only going to continue to grow in the coming weeks, as fans waited for the previously announced release date of May 4, 2018. The first weekend of May has long been a staple for Marvel Studios, making the eventual announcement that their biggest movie yet would occupy that same window hardly shocking. While that wasn’t surprising, their latest announcement is.

Marvel Studios just announced that Avengers: Infinity War has been moved up one week, so it will now release around the world on April 27th. The announcement came as part of a Twitter exchange with the MCU’s biggest star, Robert Downey Jr., who politely asked if it would be possible for everyone to see the movie early. Thankfully, Marvel has made just that happen.

Fans located domestically will undoubtedly be excited that Infinity War is coming earlier than some expected, but it doesn’t change the wait for several international markets. Projections for Infinity War were always going to be big, but Marvel would’ve split the difference by opening domestically a week later than internationally. Thanks to this move, they will certainly post one of the biggest single worldwide weekends of all-time. Continuing down the box office path, it also ensures that Infinity War will have an even larger window to dominate. The biggest competition comes with Deadpool 2 on May 18th and Solo: A Star Wars Story on May 25th, but Infinity War now has three weeks without any major competition.

There’s also a point to made that the move could be for the best interest of fans globally too, not just Marvel’s opening weekend numbers. Whereas some markets would’ve been able to see the movie early (potentially resulting in spoilers to surface online), no one outside of press will see it before hand. This should protect the film’s plot, which is sure to shake up the MCU in major ways. Knowing that spoilers likely won’t be online before seeing the movie should leave fans at peace in the lead up - as long LEGO sets and other toys don’t spoil the movie first.
