Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has only just begun with Captain America: Civil War kicking things off in May. While excitement levels are high for Doctor Strange, the next film up on the docket, it is nothing in comparison to what fans everywhere are hoping for Avengers: Infinity War. Even though there are still five films between viewers and the next Avengers installment, production kicks off in Atlanta near the end of the year, with Josh Brolin already on set running through rehearsals.
There has been plenty of intrigue in the story for Infinity War and how it will reflect what has so far happened in the MCU and what is still to come, but there has not been many reports regarding what is in store for the plot. That has seemingly begun to change as of today, with a new report pointing towards a different Avengers comic run as a reference point.
LRM has decided to reveal what they are hearing is the plot for Infinity War, which reportedly will draw a lot of concepts from the Infinity Gauntlet storyline in the comics. According to LRM’s report, Thanos will be gathering the Infinity Stones, which has proven to be a tougher task for the Mad Titan than he may have initially thought. The reasoning for this is his desire to impress Death, and will do so by rampaging the galaxy to collect enough souls to please her. This means that the literal incarnation of Death will make her debut in Infinity War.
This report is none too surprising with many fans already thinking something along these plot points would be explored during the movie. If Thanos is in fact going to assemble all six Infinity Stones during this movie, it does point to the quickly approaching death of Vision, who is powered by the Mind Stone. This has been something fans have been hoping to put off until possibly the end of Infinity War, but Thanos will need every stone to operate the glove at full power, which means Vision’s days are numbered.
LRM also touches on a theory that Cate Blanchett’s Hela from Thor: Ragnarok could double as Death in the MCU, but they were not able to either confirm or debunk that theory. As the leader of Hell, it would make sense for Marvel Studios to make Hela and Death the same being as to not confuse audiences. Plus, Blanchett is one of the most prestigious actresses in Hollywood so hopefully she does not have a small role in the MCU. Having her be introduced as Hela in Ragnarok, only to reveal she is also Death would set her up for another movie or two and give the universe another recurring villain to use.
While these reports and theories are fun, none of this is officially confirmed at this point, even if it does seem to line up. Marvel Studios has not always done straight adaptations from comic runs before so even if the general story is based around the Infinity Gauntlet comic run, expect them to make some changes of their own.
