Marvel’s licensing partners are helping ramp up the excitement for Avengers: Infinity War with the release of another 18 new illustrated character posters, joining the third-party licensed posters from Trends which showcased the film’s new villains.. With the release of Infinity War less than 2 months away, Marvel Studios has been teasing fans with a steady stream of marketing for the film, starting with the 30-second Super Bowl teaser in early February, followed by the reveal of several product tie-ins, which in some cases included character bios and descriptions of their motivations. And on this front we’ll have plenty of exclusive Avengers 3 content beginning next week!

Adding to the excitement was the reveal by Disney and Marvel Studios last week that the film moved up its release date a full week from May 4 to April 27, which no doubt prompted them to put their collective marketing foot a little heavier on the gas to release marketing material at a faster pace. On Tuesday, Marvel focused on members of the Avengers - or at least some of them - with a smattering of new character posters.

All 18 illustrated character posters are featured together here, and include such Avengers as Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk and Black Widow, as well as Doctor Strange, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Bucky, Iron Spider, War Machine and Falcon. Also highlighted are six Guardians of the Galaxy members, including Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Mantis and Groot. The posters have a wonderful retro vibe to them, and are almost reminiscent of the trippy, luminescent artwork for Thor: Ragnarok.

The interesting thing about the poster set is there are notable absences among the ranks. Nowhere to be found are character posters of fellow superheroes like Black Panther, Hawkeye, Ant-Man or Nebula, or for that matter, posters of such villains as Thanos or Loki. In all likelihood, posters of those characters are on the way, and probably because Disney and Marvel didn’t want to inflict sensory overload on the fan base by dropping all of the images at once. After all, Infinity War is expected to include as many as 76 characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including up to 40 Marvel superheroes.

With a Black Panther character poster surely on the way, it will be interesting to see how much more emphasis Disney and Marvel will place on the promotion of Chadwick Boseman’s character, as well as other Wakandans who will appear in Infinity War. At least from the indications in previous teaser footage, Black Panther’s homeland is clearly a setting for part of the action in Infinity War, so hopefully the film’s promotional campaign will acknowledge Wakanda’s contribution to the narrative - especially given the immense response to Black Panther worldwide.

UPDATE: Disney Studios publicist Darrell Borquez has revealed that these Infinity War posters and the hero name “Iron Spider” are not official marketing material from Marvel Studios. We have however confirmed that Disney Consumer Products is licensing out “Iron Spider” for posters, toys, and other merchandise. That means these posters can be officially licensed, but not the main “movie posters” from the film divisions which are still to come.
