Hawkeye’s absence from Avengers: Infinity War’s marketing is part of a long play, according to the film’s directors. One of the biggest questions throughout the promotion of Infinity War has been the whereabouts of Hawkeye. Its no secret that he’s in the movie, but it’d be difficult to believe that by just looking at promos. Hawkeye hasn’t been featured in any Infinity War trailers (and was even cropped out of the newest Infinity War TV spot), and Jeremy Renner can’t even get his name on the poster.

The strategy has left many asking where is Hawkeye during Infinity War, and there’s yet to be a definitive answer. We’ve heard teases of Hawkeye being on his own adventure during the film, one that could lead to a very different role for him in Avengers 4 too. But, make no mistake, Hawkeye’s absence is part of the plan.

Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo touched on the lack of Hawkeye in the marketing in an interview with Joe.ie. With the movie’s release so close, they aren’t about to spill the beans now. So, the best they could do is just tease this is all part of the long term plan for Hawkeye:

Its fair to say that Hawkeye has routinely drawn the short end of the stick based on how the other OG Avengers have faired. He’s only made four appearances so far. Even though Hulk and Black Widow don’t have their own franchises either, they’ve received co-star status (in Thor: Ragnarok and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, respectively), something Hawkeye’s yet to get. It appears he will have a very small role in Infinity War, so hopefully this long play will pay off big time in Avengers 4.

Anthony Russo: All will be revealed.

Joe Russo: We keep saying, ‘Patience is a virtue,’ we did not forget the twice-nominated Jeremy Renner. We just cooked up a story for him that is a little bit of a long play. Not a short play.

We’ve previously laid out our theory for what Hawkeye’s role in the next two Avengers films will be. If done correctly, Hawkeye’s tragic turn could finally give Renner something to sink his teeth into. He’s teased a major arc for Hawkeye too, so now it’ll just be up to Avengers 4 to deliver.

In the meantime, fans are sure to continue having fun with the lack of Hawkeye. We’ve already seen multiple fan posters looking to give Hawkeye his chance to shine, and the Russos are even playing along on social media. Thankfully, we’ll know with absolute certainty what Hawkeye’s future will be in just a few weeks when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters.
