Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo have addressed a big fan question: Why did Spider-Man have longer to say goodbye than the other characters who disappeared? By now, the whole world is aware of the massive events that unfolded at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. With just a snap of his all-powerful fingers, the Mad Titan Thanos wiped out half of all life in the universe - and a good chunk of the movie’s cast of superheroes - leaving the future of the MCU very much up in the air.

Since Infinity War’s release a month ago, fans have found themselves in a state of grief over the loss of so many beloved characters. Though most expect Thanos’ acts to be reversed by the time Avengers 4 rolls around, that hasn’t stopped upset fans from flooding social media with memes expressing their bereavement. If one death, in particular, affected people more than the others, it was definitely the death of Peter Parker/Spider-Man, who literally died in Tony Stark’s arms after uttering the now famous phrase, “I don’t feel so good.”

As many have noted, though, most of the other characters who vanished did so unexpectedly; Spider-Man actually had a chance to linger for a moment and fully realize what was happening before turning to dust. Why was it that Spidey got to stick around long enough for a moving death scene and other characters didn’t? Fans have assumed it was because of Spider-Man’s Spidey Sense, and now the Russo Brothers have confirmed that theory. Speaking to Huffington Post, the filmmakers explained that it was all about Peter’s Spidey sense. When asked if Spidey sense gave Peter a premonition of his coming doom, Joe Russo replied, “That’s correct. He was aware of something.”

Spider-Man’s ability to sense danger, dubbed the Spidey Sense, has long been one of the character’s primary abilities. However, that particular power was missing from Spidey’s repertoire for last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, leading fans to wonder if Spidey sense would ever make an appearance in the MCU. But that question was answered by Infinity War’s trailers, which clearly showed Peter Parker’s arm hair literally stand on end as the Black Order’s ship arrived on earth.

Unfortunately for Peter, his Spidey Sense wasn’t enough to help him save the universe from Thanos once the Mad Titan had his hands on all six Infinity Stones. Getting an early warning of his imminent disappearance via snap only gave Spider-Man a few more seconds to realize the horrible thing that was happening to him, thus allowing for a very emotional scene between Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr., a scene that will linger in fans’ minds for a long time. Some might argue that other characters were short-changed by not receiving their own powerful death scenes. But in a movie as packed with emotional moments as Avengers: Infinity War, giving every character a genuine goodbye might have been too much for audiences, not to mention what it would’ve done to the already protracted running time.
