Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo explain the reason behind giving fake scripts to their cast and shooting scenes that were ultimately not part of the film at all. Amidst celebrations for its 10th anniversary, Marvel Studios is preparing for their biggest release to date - Avengers: Infinity War, which marks the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as we have come to know it.

Infinity War will bring together most of the current superhero roster of the MCU to fight Thanos as he collects the Infinity Stones to create the ultimate mayhem. Throughout the years, Marvel’s secrecy around the plots of its films has become a sort of trademark, with even the casts joking about what could happen to them if they leak any information. Given the importance of Infinity War in the MCU, is not surprising that the level of secrecy around it is higher than ever, even prompting the Russos to hand out fake scripts and shoot fake scenes to avoid leaks.

In an interview with Games Radar, directors Joe and Anthony Russo, as well as cast members Paul Bettany (Vision) and Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) spoke about the secrecy around the film, which started in the early stages of production. The Russos had previously stated that they were “too tired to shoot anything that’s not going in the movie” after a couple of set photos were published, supposedly from fake scenes. As it turns out, they did film fake scenes in order to avoid leaks at all costs. Joe Russo explained:

Bettany confirmed as much, sharing that the cast rehearsed scripts that “had fake scenes in it, fake twists in it, fake storylines”, with Olsen adding that they were given “fake endings” as well. Bettany added that they didn’t know those scenes were fake until they got on set and were then given “the real deal and we kind of deal with it there and then."

“We put a lot of effort into making sure nobody knows the true story of the film. All the actors were given fake scripts… very few people have seen the actual film itself."

Joe Russo went on to explain that this was, in part, for the sake of the actors’ sanity, stating they can’t trust anybody - especially Tom Holland, who has history as a terrible secret-keeper:

The director also added that this is all for the fans who have stuck with the MCU all these years, as they don’t want them to have Infinity War’s ending spoiled. And if all this isn’t enough to keep spoilers away, the studio launched the #ThanosDemandsYourSilence social media campaign so everyone can enjoy the film as they should.

“We can’t trust anybody – at least of all Tom Holland! – with the truth. It’s a burden to bear for them. It’s probably easier to have read a fake script and a fake ending because they don’t have the pressure of knowing what happens in the movie and then they have to hide it."

The Russos recently revealed that there will be “some good stuff for the DVD” as they allowed as much improvisation from the actors as they could, so we can only hope that some of the aforementioned fake scenes will be among the extras for the home release. In the end, all these measures to keep spoilers away will not only give the fans the cinematic experience they have been waiting for, it will also give the cast the chance to experience it at the same time that the audience does.
