Captain Marvel almost didn’t get her new look in Avengers: Endgame, as one Marvel Studios producer was against the idea. After much anticipation, audiences finally were introduced to Brie Larson’s version of Carol Danvers earlier this year. For many, her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a long time coming, and the success of Captain Marvel shows just how much interest there is in her, and more female-led superhero movies.

The good news for those who quickly latched onto Captain Marvel was that she was set to return to the big screen just a few weeks later in Avengers: Endgame. Her arrival in the main MCU story comes almost 30 years after her origin, but many were still surprised to see that her look changed over this time. The main difference - outside of more makeup - came with her suit, which underwent a redesign since the end of Captain Marvel. However, little did we know that her look would change again in Avengers: Endgame, but this time it was an even bigger one.

Captain Marvel received another new suit in Avengers: Endgame, but more readily noticeable was her new, shorter hair style. The look is one of the many Carol has had in the comics in the past, and it turns out that Marvel Studios’ EVP of production Victoria Alonso originally didn’t want this change to happen. As she told IGN, she was worried about possibly confusing audiences.

Alonso being against the haircut for Carol could point to some sort of compromise being made for the final product. In Avengers: Endgame, Carol looks exactly like she did at the end of her solo film during the post-credits scene, which wasn’t that different from her look in the finale. It’s possible that the Russo brothers wanted Carol to have the shorter hair from the get-go, but they eventually decided to wait until after the five-year time jump to do it instead. This way, the new look could be incorporated into the film, but audiences would first see Carol as she’s looked in the past.

That haircut was a conversation. And I was against it for a while because I was afraid that people had just met her and had just realized who she was and then we were changing her hair. And I thought, is it too soon? But clearly, it wasn’t.

In just two appearances though, Captain Marvel has already had several different costumes and looks. Her next appearance could be any of them too, as it’s not yet known when or where Brie Larson will reprise the role. A sequel to Captain Marvel is definitely on the way, but her previous look could return if it’s another prequel, while this new Avengers: Endgame look could stick if she continues to operate in the present day of the MCU. Regardless of what she looks like, the important thing is that the studio, directors, writers, and Larson continue to perfect the character. As long as audiences continue to root for Captain Marvel, it shouldn’t matter much what she looks like.
