Thanos (Josh Brolin) was supposed to attack Vormir in an earlier cut of Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios’ culminating film has been rereleased in cinemas this weekend before it finally finishes its theatrical run. And since it’s been two months after its original debut, people involved in making the movie can now openly talk about what went on behind-the-scenes during production - including reveals regarding scenes that didn’t make it on the big screen. Apparently, one saw the Mad Titan and his minions wreak havoc on Vormir.

Debuting in Avengers: Infinity War, Vormir is the secret location of the Soul Stone, which, surprisingly, is also where Red Skull has been since the last time fans saw him in Captain America: The First Avenger. The planet made a re-appearance in Endgame when the team goes back in time to collect the Infinity Stones. Not knowing what acquiring the Soul Stone entails, Clint Barton/Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) are tasked with getting it. Eventually, Nat sacrifices her life for the greater cause. But as Renner recently revealed, the small intimate sequence in Vormir wasn’t always designed to be that way.

Appearing at Ace Comic-Con (via ComicBook.com) to talk all things Endgame, Renner divulged how Thanos was originally going to attack Vormir in the film. It turns out, that whole scene was even shot, but directors Joe and Anthony Russo ultimately decided to scrap it and re-shoot the whole thing. Because of that, the intense battle that led to the emotional death of Black Widow - which, the actor admits was a “tough scene” to work - was only shot “six months ago.”

The idea of seeing Clint and Natasha fight off Thanos and his minions might have been cool to see, but Endgame’s Vormir scene services the relationship of the pair better. It gave the characters their own screen time that reflects on their friendship that goes all the way back before the Avengers even assembled. Both Renner and Johansson were also able to flex their acting muscles in a scene that wrapped up in a rather good choreographed fight scene, keeping viewers guessing right up until the very end which one of them would go over the cliff. Aside from that, seeing what seems to be a peaceful, mostly abandoned planet like Vormir ransacked by another fight feels unnecessary.

“We shot it, and it’s very different from what’s in the movie now. It’s a scene we re-shot because it was much more complicated [than the] scene that’s in Endgame now. There’s an attack, Thanos is in some ship or something, and a bunch of weird aliens were running around and it was too complicated, so what they did is we shot the scene, still with the same kind of idea, but now we’re just fighting each other to commit suicide for the Soul Stone.”

It’s curious what would’ve been the progression of story had the Russos opted to have Thanos attack Vormir. Given how the movie plays out, it’s possible that Thanos opted to go to Vormir first after he found out about the Time Heist from abducting the present-time Nebula (Karen Gillan). From there, they go through the time-traveling portal to attack Avengers HQ. The only big battle in Avengers: Endgame comes at the very end, and quite frankly, it works better that way considering the scale and magnitude of the film’s action set piece.
