An Avengers: Endgame deleted scene shows 2014 Gamora (Zoe Saldana) alive after Iron Man’s snap, while all the other heroes honor the fallen Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Earlier this year, Marvel Studios released the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far with Avengers: Endgame, which saw the original six heroes team up to restore all those lost to Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War. Avengers: Endgame also set up Phase 4 of the MCU, paving the way for certain threads and characters to be further explored in future movies like Black Widow and Thor: Love and Thunder.

After Avengers: Endgame, Gamora is one such character left with a mysterious future who will no doubt return in another MCU movie. Thanos killed present-day Gamora during Infinity War, but 2014 Gamora showed up in Endgame alongside Thanos from that time period. Many fans presumed that meant this version of Gamora would appear in future MCU movies, namely Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After all, Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) seemed focused on finding Gamora at the end of Endgame, though he’ll also have to contend with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) joining the Guardians crew. However, there was some confusion about Gamora’s fate in Endgame, since she was never shown to have survived Iron Man’s snap that wiped out Thanos’ army.

Now, an Avengers: Endgame deleted scene released by USA Today confirms 2014 Gamora survived Iron Man’s snap, depicting her as the only hero not to take a knee in honor of the fallen Tony Stark. The scene, which can be viewed below, will have MCU fans crying all over again for Iron Man’s death as heroes like Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) all take a knee for their departed colleague and friend.

Speaking to USA Today, Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo explained why the scene was eventually cut: “It’s a beautiful scene with moving performances, but we filmed it prior to Tony Stark’s funeral. The funeral scene ultimately became a more resonant and emotional reflection on Tony’s death for us.” Fans may agree that the funeral was a better way to give Tony Stark and his Iron Man legacy a satisfying sendoff in the MCU, but others may argue that Avengers: Endgame could have been stronger if it included both scenes. After all, the confusion over Gamora’s fate seems to stem directly from this scene being cut, since it explicitly depicts her as still alive, but separate from the other heroes.

That said, with the Avengers: Endgame runtime clocking in at just over three hours, it’s also understandable that the Russos tried to trim it down as much as they could. Marvel Studios took a major risk in releasing a three-hour movie, because it diminishes the number of screenings a theater can have in a day, which can ultimately impact a movie’s box office gross. But with Avengers: Endgame passing Avatar to become the biggest box office earner of all time, it seems Marvel’s risk paid off. And with the movie hitting home release very soon, fans will get to watch this and more Avengers: Endgame deleted scenes, as well as other bonus content, from the comfort of their own home.
