Take a closer look at Captain America’s (Chris Evans) broken shield from Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios’ culminating film featured a massive final action piece that saw almost all heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe going up against Thanos (Josh Brolin) and his minions. But the battle initially began with just Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America fighting the Mad Titan in what looked like a losing effort. During the Steve Rogers’ one-on-one with the villain, his iconic shield was fragmented. Now fans can see the actual prop used during the movie in a new short clip.

Before Endgame, Captain America went on without his shield for roughly seven years. Steve left the vibranium-made weapon to Tony Stark following their falling out in Captain America: Civil War and since then, it has been in the possession of Howard Stark’s son. It was only until after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and its subsequent five-year-time-jump that Captain America got a hold of his signature shield when Tony gave it back as a sign of peace. But he wasn’t able to use it that long since it was quickly smashed into three pieces when he fought Thanos during Endgame’s climactic battle.

In a clip shared by Marvel Entertainment’s Prop Master, Russell Bobbitt, is a close-up look at Captain America’s broken shield in Endgame. The video also shows off the edges where the prop disintegrated and it looks so realistic. Check it out below:

For as cool as the replacement shield T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) gave Steve in Infinity War is, seeing Captain America use his iconic weapon of choice was such a thrill in Endgame - especially considering that it could very well be Evans’ last go as the beloved character. The superhero mantle and the shield were officially passed to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) in a move inspired by the comics. It’s still uncertain if Mackie will use the same exact shield design like his MCU co-star, but fans might soon find out via an upcoming Disney+ series with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky.

The shield looks dirty and bruised - a reminder of how brutal the fight with Thanos was not just for Steve, but for everyone involved. This broken shield, however, poses a couple of questions. First, during his fight with Black Panther in Civil War, T’Challa’s vibranium claws left scratch marks in the shield, which are noticeably no longer there when it re-emerged. Second, given the condition of the shield after Avengers: Endgame last action sequence, it’s curious how Captain America was able to repair it before passing it on. Future movies or Disney+ series may answer these questions down the line, but right now, it doesn’t seem like there’s any urgency to address these lingering mysteries.
