The writers of Avengers 4 promise that the film won’t simply undo everything from Avengers: Infinity War and assure fans that the deaths we’ve seen are real. Avengers 3 is dominating the box office right now, breaking a number of records after less than a week in theaters. The movie looks on track to be Marvel’s biggest release yet, at least until the sequel arrives next year.

With Avengers: Infinity War ending on a cliffhanger and a number of heroes still missing from the action, anticipation for the follow-up is already high. But it’s not entirely clear what the story will be. With so many heroes (and others throughout the universe missing), we could check back in after a time jump. After all, Ant-Man & the Wasp may be setting up a new hero and teasing a number of years will pass in the MCU by the time Avengers 4 arrives. Whatever direction the plot takes, the minds behind both movies are making it clear that not every tragedy will be undone by the time Phase 3 ends.

BuzzFeed News spoke with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely about both films, especially how the former will impact the latter. And for both writers, they want to make it clear that the death and pain in the first film won’t be easily washed away in the second.

We’ve heard a lot about how Avengers 3 and 4 are no longer two parts of the same story. On one level, this seems like an exaggeration as clearly next year’s movie will deal with the fallout from Avengers: Infinity War. But with Farmer Thanos taking stock of his work and dozens of heroes (and half of the Earth’s population) now destroyed, Avengers 4 may indeed start in a very different place than the last film ended.

Markus: [Avengers 4] doesn’t do what you think it does. It is a different movie than you think it is. Also…[the deaths are] real. I just want to tell you it’s real, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will be able to move on to the next stage of grief.

McFeely: Put it this way, I think [Infinity War] is a fairly mature movie for a blockbuster. It’s got a lot of fun in it, obviously, but boy, it gets very mature. The second one is also mature. We’re going to own these choices, and hopefully surprise and delight you and get you invested. It’s by the same studio, the same filmmaking team. They were written at the same time, shot at the same time. They’re clearly connected, but they are definitely two different movies, one of which is dependent on what happened previous.

Hopefully, a title reveal for Avengers 4 will arrive soon and clue us into just what the story might entail. We know Avengers 4 won’t be called Infinity Gauntlet and we’ve heard for quite some time that the actual title will be a spoiler of sorts. Knowing that, 2019 could bring Marvel’s darkest film to date as we dive into an MCU that’s been unable to undo the destruction wrought by Thanos. And though Marvel’s upcoming slate and new, popular characters mean most of the deaths in Avengers: Infinity War will somehow be undone, it seems that not everyone will be coming back to life in Avengers 4.
