Avengers 4 star Sebastian Stan says filming on the superhero sequel may finally wrap up in January. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 shot back-to-back, making for one epic shooting marathon for Stan and the saga’s other actors. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige has called Avengers 4 a “finale” for the MCU. The so-called Phase 4 of the MCU launches after Avengers 4, with 20 Marvel movies planned.

As the first major team-up, 2012’s The Avengers marked a watershed moment in movie history. For one, the film proved the viability of epic superhero team-ups, with its $1.5 billion worldwide gross. For better or worse, the film also launched the era of the shared universe. Even Star Wars went the expanded universe route with Rogue One, following the Marvel example. The luster of the shared universe concept has dimmed in recent months thanks to developments at the box office. However, Marvel’s cinematic universe continues to chug along with no end in sight.

Some thought shooting on Avengers 4 might take forever, but actor Sebastian Stan now says filming may soon wrap. Speaking to Collider, Stan indicated that Avengers 4 may be set to wrap up in mid-January.

The first half of the MCU-altering Avengers double-punch, Avengers Infinity War, just dropped its first trailer. This first glimpse of Infinity War created great excitement among Marvel fans, who have been tearing apart the clip in search of clues. In the film, the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) wields the Infinity Gauntlet with the intention of wreaking havoc. Only the greatest team-up of all time can hope to save Earth from the wrath of Thanos. The Avengers must assemble once again, and this time they’ll have help from the Guardians of the Galaxy.

“I think January 13, maybe. Maybe not. It might keep going. It will be the one movie that will have shot the longest. Actually, it’s two movies, so that’s technically different.”

Where the Avengers saga will go for the fourth film is anyone’s guess. In an interview, Avengers co-director Joe Russo teased the chance that major characters may die in order to raise the stakes for everyone else. Several big-name stars are expected to exit the MCU after Avengers 4, so any one of their characters could be a candidate to meet a tragic end. If Disney succeeds in its effort to buy Fox, there’s also a chance the X-Men could arrive for Avengers 4, which would of course require more shooting.

Meanwhile, Stan gets to show his chops in another project dealing with characters who are the opposite of superheroes. Stan plays Jeff Gillooly alongside Margot Robbie’s Tonya Harding in the true-life comedy-drama I, Tonya. Shooting on that took 30 days, a far cry from the full year Infinity War and Avengers 4 have been before cameras.
