Sean Gunn says that Rocket Raccoon’s distaste for superheroes will be interesting to watch in Avengers: Infinity War. The film brings virtually every major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe together for an epic battle with the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin). And the interaction between all those disparate characters is one of the most exciting elements audiences are anticipating, particularly how well (or not) the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy work side-by-side.

With everyone coming together for Infinity War, there will surely be quite a bit of humor (in addition to the universe-ending drama). A lot of that humor rests with Groot and Rocket Raccoon, who’ve made quite the team in past MCU films. While it will be interesting to see the Avengers’ reactions to a talking raccoon and a sentient tree, Rocket and Groot’s quest to help Thor create his new hammer will surely contain its fair share of humor, but they’ll also be part of the final battle with the Outriders in Wakanda. So, it sounds as if audiences will have plenty of Rocket Raccoon to look forward to.

Screen Geek spoke to Sean Gunn at MCM Comic-Con in Birmingham last weekend. Naturally, they asked Gunn whose reaction was the most entertaining. Gunn couldn’t answer, but he turned the question upside-down.

“Oh gosh. I think you’re going to have to be the judge of that. Although – it was certainly fun to see many of these new characters through the eyes of Rocket, because Rocket does not have the same sort of reverence for the superheroes that the average earthling is going to have. So, I think there is a lot of fun there.”

Gunn has an excellent point. Viewers tend to have a somewhat reverential attitude towards heroes, whereas humans on MCU’s Earth have a more complicated reaction, ranging from adulation to outright fear. Rocket, of course, will go for neither option. He’s sure to look at the superheroes as primitive, and is likely to be distinctly unimpressed with their tendency to wear dazzling costumes. What’s more, as a technician who’s used to advanced technology, there are good odds that Rocket will find even the science of Wakanda to be a backwards step.

That means the humor will work both ways. On the one hand, the Avengers will reel in the surprise as they face a genius-like raccoon with an attitude problem. And on the other hand, Rocket may be singularly unimpressed with the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. But there’s one specific thing that audiences may be interested in seeing happen in Infinity War, and Screen Geek couldn’t resist asking that question: Would Rocket actually come across an actual raccoon during his visit to Earth? In the comics, Rocket famously told a bunch of raccoons to “Go put some clothes on, you’re embarrassing me.” All Gunn would say to that one was a simple, “No comment.”

Avengers: Infinity War is set to be a dark, dangerous adventure, and the stakes are higher than ever before. But that doesn’t mean Marvel won’t get a chance to generate some of their trademark humor, and it sounds as though Rocket is going to be a part of that.
