Not only will the team-up in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 be epic, but the entire experience will be an intense one full of big surprises and high stakes. While we don’t yet know the specifics of Infinity War and know even less about Avengers 4, we do know some of the shape the two films will take. Given all that’s come before the two mega-blockbusters, both films will serves as the culmination of everything that’s happened so far in the MCU. Not only does that mean a number of story threads coming to a head, but the threat of Thanos and the power of the Infinity Stones will finally be made known to the heroes we’ve met.

We already know Thanos will return for Avengers 4, something that is hardly surprising given the next two Avengers films have the same creative team and are shooting back to back. Knowing that, whatever happens in Infinity War will likely bleed over into the sequel. We know a lot of that action will take place on Earth, meaning chaos unlike anything seen in the MCU is on its way. As such, the fallout from both films will change the status quo of everything we’ve seen so far and set up a new era for Phase 4 to explore.

io9 spoke with Joe Russo, co-director of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, and he made it clear that both films would have a significant impact on the characters we know and love.

Russo’s words echo ones we previously heard hinting at possible deaths that could occur in the two new films. So far, very few heroes have perished in the MCU — and remained dead. But given the intensity of the two new films, we’ve long suspected not everyone would make it out alive.

“You know, with Winter Soldier and with Civil War, my brother and I like stakes. We believe in stakes for these movies, we fight for stakes on these films, and I think people should be prepared for a very intense experience in both Avengers 3 and Avengers 4. And they should be prepared for some pretty big surprises.”

Though we don’t know every character who will get screen time in Infinity War, we’ve heard the most important heroes in the MCU so far will get proper story arcs in the film. Given how long Captain America, Iron Man, and others have been around, it wouldn’t at all be surprising if one or more of the original Avengers perished and saw their mantle passed to someone else. Not only have the comics done this for decades, but the MCU has aged and grown to the point where such moments would feel earned.

As we get closer to the premiere of Infinity War next year, more plot and character details will begin to emerge. And when trailers finally start to arrive, we should have a much better idea of what will transpire in the epic blockbuster. Until then, it’s safe to assume the MCU won’t be the same once Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 are done.
