Mark Ruffalo has described Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel, Avengers 4, as “funny, moving and epic.” The Bruce Banner/Hulk actor, who made his debut in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers, is currently doing the promotional rounds for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, his third outing as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s big green rage monster.

According to Ruffalo, Ragnarok kicks off a three-film arc for the Hulk and Banner. Seeds that are sewn in the third Thor film will grow into some hefty character material for Ruffalo to tackle in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. This is as close as Ruffalo will get to a solo Hulk movie for the time being, due to a legal issue between Marvel and Universal.

It’s exciting, as a fan, to hear that some juicy story beats are being lined up for Ruffalo to chew on, in lieu of said solo movie. Ruffalo himself seems enthusiastic about it, too, and he clearly has a lot of faith in the talented individuals tasked with bringing this three-part Hulk story to a close. In an interview with Collider, Ruffalo had this to say about working with directors Joe and Anthony Russo on Infinity War and Avengers 4, back to back:

This optimism will be music to the ears of Marvel fans, especially those that feel Ruffalo’s Hulk has received short shrift so far in this shared universe of storytelling. Ruffalo genuinely seems pumped to have the Russo brothers, and Markus and McFeely, bringing the next two chapters of the Hulk’s big screen story to life. It should be fun to say how it all plays out, when these movies finally reach theaters.

“It’s crazy. And it’s huge. And everyone’s in it. And it’s like this epic opera that spans time and space, with all of the Marvel characters in it. All nine franchises. I mean, it’s mind-boggling. Everyone has their moment to shine. Everyone is still their characters. Nobody feels like they’re doing any kind of exposition or having to push the story. It’s so well crafted. [Writers Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely smashed the script. And it has it all: it’s funny, moving… it’s epic. It’s a Russo brothers classic, like, balls to the wall, you know? It’s gonna be amazing. They’re so talented, and they’re great guys too.”

However, for a lot of fans, Thor: Ragnarok hasn’t even arrived in theaters yet. The chance to see the Hulk living as a celebrity – and talking properly for the first time - on the scrapheap/gladiator planet of Sakaar is a highly exciting prospect. Marvel chose to put elements of the “Planet Hulk” comics into Ragnarok, as the starting point of this new Hulk trilogy. Fans are bound to be pleased by that.
